Coinbase Launches Nearly 4,000 U.S. Stocks for Eligible UK…

What Is Coinbase Offering UK Investors?

Coinbase has begun rolling out access to nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks for eligible customers in the United Kingdom, adding traditional equities to an app previously centered on cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.

Starting Aug. 6, eligible users will progressively gain access to buy, sell and manage U.S. shares alongside their crypto and fiat holdings. The service includes 24-hour trading from Monday through Friday, zero-commission transactions and fractional investing from £1.

Customers can fund stock purchases instantly with either British pounds or USDC. That setup reduces the need to move money between separate brokerage, banking and cryptocurrency accounts before placing a trade.

The company said it is the first crypto-native trading app to provide direct access to U.S. equities in the UK. The launch extends Coinbase beyond digital assets as it works toward an “Everything Exchange” combining stocks, stablecoins, savings, borrowing and crypto trading within one platform.

Keith Grose, Coinbase’s regional managing director for the UK and Europe, said the company had made progress toward creating a single place where customers could access several financial products. Coinbase plans to release additional products in the UK and European Union over the coming months.

How Will The Stock Trading Service Work?

The shares will be held in the United States by Apex Clearing. Customer orders will be routed to Apex for execution through Coinbase Capital Markets Corporation, giving users exposure to conventional U.S.-listed securities rather than blockchain-based representations of those assets.

The product provides access to major U.S. technology and artificial intelligence stocks, an area that has attracted strong retail interest. The extended 24/5 schedule also gives UK investors more time to respond to U.S. earnings releases, economic data and company announcements outside regular New York trading hours.

Fractional shares may make expensive stocks more accessible because customers can invest a fixed pound amount rather than buying a full share. Zero-commission trading may also appeal to smaller investors, although users will still need to consider foreign-exchange costs, spreads, tax treatment and the risks of trading during periods with thinner liquidity.

Coinbase is betting that convenience can help it compete with established UK investment apps. Keeping equities, cryptocurrencies and cash balances in one account could reduce friction for customers who already use Coinbase but rely on another provider for stock trading.

Investor Takeaway

Coinbase is no longer competing only with crypto exchanges. By adding U.S. stocks, savings and borrowing, it is moving closer to digital brokers and financial super-apps, where customer retention may depend on offering several products through one account.

Why Is Coinbase Expanding Beyond Crypto?

The equity launch follows the introduction of savings accounts and crypto-backed borrowing products in the UK. Together, the additions reduce Coinbase’s dependence on cryptocurrency trading fees, which can rise and fall sharply with digital asset prices and retail activity.

Stocks may provide a steadier source of customer engagement because equity markets remain active even during weak crypto cycles. They could also bring new users into the Coinbase app who are interested in U.S. companies but are not yet ready to buy digital assets.

UK retail investors have historically participated in stock markets at lower rates than investors in the United States. Coinbase believes simpler access, fractional investing and extended trading hours could help attract customers who view conventional brokerage platforms as complex or inconvenient.

The launch also gives Coinbase a route to introduce users gradually to onchain products. A customer may begin with U.S. shares, hold cash in a savings product and later use stablecoins or cryptocurrencies without leaving the app.

Will Coinbase Bring Tokenized Stocks To The UK?

Coinbase chose conventional U.S. shares for the initial rollout rather than tokenized equities, arguing that the structure could provide immediate value under existing rules. Grose said tokenized stocks remain an important part of the future of financial markets and that Coinbase intends to work with UK regulators on offering them later.

The company’s recently secured UK MiFID licence expanded its permissions to provide additional investments, including equities for retail customers and derivatives for professional traders. That regulatory base may support further launches as Coinbase expands the range of assets available through its UK business.

The UK’s new crypto regime is expected to take effect in October 2027, while the authorization gateway is due to open in September 2026. Coinbase views the framework as supportive of its plan to combine crypto, stocks, stablecoins, savings and borrowing under one regulated platform.

Tokenized equities could eventually extend trading beyond the 24/5 model and allow shares or share-linked assets to move through blockchain networks. However, custody rights, shareholder protections, market access and settlement rules would need to be resolved before such products could reach UK retail users at scale.

For now, the main test is whether Coinbase can convert its existing crypto customer base into active stock investors. Trading volumes, account funding and repeat usage will show whether the “Everything Exchange” can compete with specialist brokers rather than serving only as an expanded cryptocurrency app.
